Bungoma Senator Elect Moses Wetangula Announces Plan to Succeed Raila Odinga and Vie for Presidency in 2022

A crisis is looming at the National Super Alliance (NASA) after Ford-Kenya Leader Moses Wetang’ula on Sunday declared that he was the best candidate to succeed their current head Raila Odinga.

Speaking at Christ the King Catholic Church in Bungoma town, Wetangula explained that he would vie for the presidency in 2022 following Odinga's declaration that he would not seek the presidency again.

"I sacrificed my ambition to support Raila in the just concluded elections for the sake of opposition's unity. This was despite having launched my presidential bid.

"But because he won’t vie for the bigger seat, I will go for it in 2022," Wetang'ula stated.

The Bungoma Senator elect noted that he was ready for the Presidency as he had previously served in different capacities as an elected leader and Cabinet Minister.

His announcement could break the opposition's unity since his other co-principals; Kalonzo Musyoka and Musalia Mudavadi had also expressed their interest for the seat in 2022.

Last month, Kalonzo announced that in 2022 it must be him on the ballot without any contention.

"Without hiding anything from you, Raila Odinga will occupy the presidency for five years and we have agreed... in writing, not like the previous arrangement which was neither here nor there.

"Now it is clearly agreed that Raila will help Kenya transit to the next level and in 2022 it will be Kalonzo Musyoka and no other story," he stated.

Regarding the petition filed at the Supreme Court, Wetang’ula stated that he will put aside his role as a Senator and represent NASA at the Supreme Court.

"Jubilee never won the just concluded elections. They rigged their win and we have enough evidence that we have presented in court.

"I am going to represent NASA so that we get justice for the millions of Kenyans who sought change through the ballot," he stated.

The NASA leader echoed Odinga's sentiments regarding their next move after the petition noting that if the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Jubilee, they would seek alternative methods to resolve the dispute.
