President Uhuru Kenyatta Applauds Evans Kidero for Conceding Defeat, Wishes Him Well

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday thanked former Nairobi Governor Dr Evans Kidero for his service to the city for the last five years.

Speaking during the inauguration of incoming Governor Mike Sonko, the President applauded Kidero for his patriotism in accepting defeat graciously and handing over power amicably.

“Kwanza ni kumshukuru gavana ambaye alikuweko, Gavana  Dr Evans Kidero kwa vile ameonyesha ya kwamba yeye ni mtu anayependa taifa lake, wamefanya campaign na amekubali ya kwamba Mike Mbuvi ameshinda na amemkabidhi uongozi kwa roho safi, mimi nasema mungu ambariki, asante sana na twakutakia mema uko mbele,” said Kenyatta.

Loosely translated: "First I would like to thank Kidero for showing patriotism, they campaigned and he has accepted defeat. I want to wish him all the best in his future endeavours and may the Almighty God Bless him".

President Kenyatta also congratulated Sonko on his election and urged him to work for all in the city, adding that the National Government would support him in transforming Nairobi for the better.

The President made the remarks after Kidero conceded defeat to Sonko who trounced him in the August elections.

Speaking at the same venue, Kidero abandoned his earlier call for a vote recount and wished the new governor well during his tenure.

“I promised a smooth transition and I have no problem referring to Mike Sonko as my Governor,” he stated.

He added that his term as the first governor of Nairobi was hard and acknowledged that he had accepted the will of the people.

“I acknowledge that leaders are chosen by God,” he proclaimed.

Sonko on his part made a number of promises and assured residents of the city that he would not let them down.

"Nairobi will never be the same again. This day marks the end of cartels," he said.

In his address, he highlighted several areas he would rectify to ensure Nairobi was a better place.

1. Ensuring timely services to all and value for taxpayers.

2. Cleaning up the city

3. Adequate supply of water to all residents

4. Building more markets, improving existing ones and quick issuance of licenses

5. Seal all loopholes of cartels handling buying and selling of land

6. Support women, youth and people with disabilities in setting up businesses
