Presidential Petition Ruling to be Given on Friday - Chief Justice David Maraga

The Supreme Court adjourned on Tuesday evening after hearing submissions on forms and system audit report regarding the 2017 General Election.

Chief Justice David Maraga thanked all lawyers for their decorum during their submissions and stated that his bench would give a ruling on Friday, 1, September.

"That brings us to the end of the hearing. We will deliver judgement on Friday," stated Maraga.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga argued the presidential poll was rigged and took his case to the court, challenging IEBC's declaration of President Uhuru Kenyatta's re-election with 54 percent of the vote.

After hearing closing arguments from lawyers representing the National Super Alliance (NASA) opposition coalition, the IEBC and Kenyatta, CJ Maraga admitted making a ruling would not be easy but assured Kenyans of a ruling on Friday.

Earlier on Tuesday, NASA lawyer James Orengo claimed that nearly 5 million votes were affected by discrepancies and claimed that they had not been granted full access to servers.

In his closing submissions on Tuesday, Odinga who has challenged President Kenyatta’s re-election told the Supreme Court that his contestations cannot so easily be wished away.

Odinga through lawyer Pheroze Nowrojee submitted that his dispute of President Kenyatta’s win was based on more than just numbers; it was about the integrity of the whole exercise.

The two lawyers stated that if the case was simply a “piece of science fiction,” as suggested by counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi, they wouldn’t have spent a lot of time trying to convince the Supreme Court that the August 8 presidential election was indeed credible.
