President Uhuru Kenyatta Gives Major Condition for IEBC to be Disbanded Before Rerun

President Uhuru Kenyatta has set one condition if the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is to be disbanded before the rerun election is held.

Speaking on Saturday during a surprise meet-the-people appearance in Nakuru, Uhuru stated that the commissioners would only be removed from office if the Supreme Court judges are ejected as well.

"Disbandment of the IEBC should start with the disbandment of Supreme Court," he proclaimed.

The president confirmed that he was ready for the fresh elections that would be held within 60 days adding that the current electoral commission headed by Mr Wafula Chebukati must preside over the polls and not anyone else.

"IEBC will conduct the election and that is it. We do not know about that other party we are being told to wait for, there is nothing like that and we are not jokers also," Mr Kenyatta said.

Uhuru further attacked Chief Justice David Maraga for the Supreme Court decision to nullify his win in the August elections.

"He has gone and planned with his people from the court thinking that we will be afraid. But they should read our eyes, we only fear God and the rule of law.

Maraga... don’t joke with Kenyans we are not stupid. Humbling ourselves does not mean we are fearing, maintaining peace is not being fools," the president maintained during the impromptu visit.

Deputy President William Ruto reiterated Uhuru's words claiming that the court's ruling was manipulated by political connections.

"Maraga can’t tell us it’s important to have connections in court. We have connections with the people on the ground," Mr Ruto stated.

He expressed confidence that the will of the people would prevail in the fresh elections.

"Vitendawili (proverbs, in reference to Raila Odinga) and Maraga, whether they like it or not it’s the people’s decision that will stand," Mr Ruto maintained.
