Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero Reveals Why Daily Revenue Has Increased

Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has termed the growth of Nairobi revenue by 500 percent under Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko leadership as temporary.

Dr Kidero pointed out that it was normal for the county to collect large sums of money at the beginning of a month.

He noted that parking tickets fees for more than 30,000 matatus in Nairobi get paid in the first week of the month.

“The increase in revenue being bandied around is all lies. We know that seasonal parking tickets for the 30,000 matatus in Nairobi is paid in the first week of the month and so it is not a surprise that the money was collected. It has been collected in every first week of the month,” Dr Kidero stated.

“The way the county collects money is seasonal and October to March is the high season when people pay their rents and so we will see high revenues,” he added.

The former Governor claimed that during his reign, Nairobi County managed to increase its revenue from Sh5 Billion to Sh12 Billion and also introduced automated payment system, ejiji pay, for payment of parking services.

He asked the current regime not to shy away from acknowledging the projects he initiated at City Hall.

Last week, Sonko announced that the daily revenue collections at City Hall had increased from Sh7 Million to Sh38.2 Million.

Sonko cited the impromptu sting operations he leads as the cause of the rising daily collections.

The Governor noted that the collections were made through the 14 digitised revenue streams out of the 138 sources of income for the County, adding that he would ensure that all the sources of revenue were digitized.

Sonko further warned motorists who have been evading payment of parking fees and bribing the parking attendants.
