IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati Fires Back at DP William Ruto over Presidential Election

IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati has silenced Deputy President William Ruto over his comments regarding the upcoming Presidential election.

Speaking in Naivasha shortly after an IEBC officials' retreat, Chebukati noted that the DP's remarks claiming that he was meeting National Super Alliance (NASA) Principals at night were false, reckless and baseless.

The IEBC Chair challenged DP Ruto and all his accusers to make public the nature of the meetings and venues where he (Chebukati) was allegedly meeting up with the Opposition Leaders.

He further noted that no official of the Commission was associated with any political party, adding that the electoral body was working to ensure Kenyans have a free and fair poll on October 17.

"We, as commissioners, are referees and a referee must be neutral.

"We are not partisan, none of us is in Jubilee or NASA, you are bound to hear so many things and allegations. But the truth is we have not held any secret meetings with any of the political candidates,” he stated.

Chebukati affirmed his team's commitment to delivering credible elections explaining that despite the challenges faced in the August 8, election, the Commission had learned a lot and was ready to deliver a more credible poll.

"We wish to urge the nation to be patient with us in the coming days as we prepare for the fresh presidential election. Our commitment to delivering a free, fair, and credible election remains steadfast,” Chebukati stated.

On Sunday, Deputy President William Ruto accused Chebukati of secretly meeting NASA leaders at night ahead of the October elections.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, the DP claimed that Chebukati was working with the opposition and engaging in sideshows instead of focusing on delivering a free, fair and credible election.

"I'm aware Chebukati is meeting NASA leaders at night. That could be why he is sending messages here and there, sensational memos.

"I'm asking him to stop the writing memos and concentrate on delivering a credible election,” Ruto stated.
