Government Puts on Notice All Teachers Planning to Work for IEBC in October Polls

The government has issued a new directive to all the teachers seeking to work for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) during the October polls.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on Tuesday stated that all teachers seeking to work for the IEBC must get written permission from county directors before taking up the election duties.

Earlier on, the electoral body assured that plans to carry out the fresh presidential polls were underway announcing that they would hire 40,883 presiding officers, 135,038 clerks, 580 ICT staff and 290 constituency logistics assistance from existing database.

On Monday, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati announced that the electoral body will meet Jubilee and NASA presidential candidates to discuss issues regarding the upcoming presidential polls.

Speaking in Naivasha, where the Commissioners retreated over the weekend, Chebukati affirmed that the officials had resolved to work together despite the recent wave of infighting that rocked the commission.

Chebukati noted that the officials were committed to doing the work they were appointed to do in accordance with the law adding that none of them would be fired.

He acknowledged that he had written the memo which leaked to the media last week addressed to CEO Ezra Chiloba but noted that it was supposed to be confidential.

In an interview with The East African, IEBC CEO Chiloba was asked about the budget for the fresh election, to which he responded: "We project about Ksh12 billion ($116 million) most of which will go towards human resources and logistics."

He revealed that the electoral body had already written to the National Treasury requesting the release of the funds. and gave a breakdown of the budget shows what specific areas the money will be spent on.
