IEBC Official Charged Over August 8 Election Offence

An Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) official has been arraigned in court over errors that occurred during the August 8 General Election.

Mary Rita Ndwiga, who served as a presiding officer of Kambo Market polling station in Embu county, was charged with neglecting her duties two days after the voting process.

According to the charge sheet, Ms Ndwiga is accused that on August 10, she, without reasonable cause or excuse, neglected to perform official duty of securing unused ballot papers in an A-4 tamper proof paper.

The presiding officer is said to have committed the offence at Kangaru Boys secondary school which was the Manyatta constituency tallying centre.

On Sunday, the National Super Alliance (NASA) legal team divulged that it was collecting evidence of offences reportedly committed by officials who presided over the August elections.

The team stated that it was compiling a list of more than 1,000 election officials, mainly presiding officers and returning officers, who deliberately refused or failed to relay accurate results of the presidential election to the national tallying centre.

NASA stated it would avail the information to the Director of Public Prosecution seeking to show how top IEBC managers messed up with the election which was nullified by the Supreme Court on September 1

They further noted they would file a case against IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba, his deputy Betty Nyabuto-Sungura, elections director Immaculate Kassait, ICT head James Muhati and head of legal Services Praxedes Tororey.

NASA warned that should the DPP fail to prosecute the election officials, they would pursue private prosecutions in local courts.
