Mwingi North MP Accused of Plotting Attack on Uhuru's Campaign Team in Ukambani

A section of Jubilee Party campaigners has accused a National Super Alliance (NASA) MP of being behind an attack that saw a number of people injured and several vehicles damaged during a campaign trail in Ukambani region on Tuesday.

A group of businessmen from Thika town, who were attacked as they were campaigning for the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto, have blamed Mwingi North MP Gideon Mulyungi for planning the attack.

According to the team's chairman, Chege Wa Gathu, youth who were on motorbikes pelted their caravan with stones as they left Mwingi town at the end of a tour of Kiambu, Machakos and Kitui Counties.

"We have received information that the irate youth had been incited by Mwingi MP who had sent men driving in a Probox (car) and a white Lexus to trail us up to Mwingi," Mr Gathu stated.

The campaigners also called on the police to investigate, arrest and arraign in court the youth who were behind the attack.

Former Democratic Party (DP) Chairman Dick Githaiga condemned the incident, noting that Kenyans are free to campaign for their preferred presidential candidates in every corner of the country.

In Kisumu County, youth held protests Wednesday morning blocking roads and engaging Police in a standoff after they stormed Jumuia Hotel where a group of women was meeting.

The youth protested what they believed to be a secret meeting to sell national Identity cards ahead of the October 17 poll.

Several women were injured after they were attacked by the armed youth before the hotel decided to lock doors.
