IEBC Commissioner Akombe Reveals She Fears For Her Life

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) official Roselyn Akombe now fears for her life after her brother received death threats that caused him to flee the country.

During an interview with The Nation, the IEBC Commissioner revealed that the threats to her brother were targeted at her and fellow commissioners.

“He left the country last week when the threats became too much,” Ms Akombe revealed.

The newspaper reported that Ms Akombe's 34-year-old brother left the country with his wife and three children through the Namanga border point on September 5 after persistent threats from unknown people.

“He is a man who loves this country and had always resisted our attempts to get him something to do abroad.  I feel responsible for it. It feels bad but what can you do about it?” she added.

Akombe's brother opted to use the road before crossing the border neighboring Tanzania and eventually landed in his host country eight days later, after passing through five countries.

The IEBC commissioner disclosed that she currently felt more insecure as compared to when she was sent to UN missions in war-torn countries.

“I have been to Somalia, Yemen, Jordan, Iraq and even Libya for security assessment missions but on a personal basis I have never felt this insecure,” she conveyed.

The Nation reported that when asked whether she had reported the threats to her and her brother to the police, Dr Akombe answered in the negative but did not give reasons.

The newspaper further revealed that on Saturday, Inspector- General of Police Joseph Boinnet stated that he was not aware of the incident.

“I don’t know anything about what you have just told me. Nothing at all,” he told The Nation.

The revelation comes a week after National Super Alliance leader Raila Odinga claimed that the IEBC Commissioners are being threatened and intimidated by State agencies.

Addressing the media at Okoa Kenya headquarters, the Opposition leader noted that some of the IEBC commissioners had received death threats in addition to their security being withdrawn.

"A number of the IEBC commissioners are under serious threat by the government after their security has been withdrawn. Some of them are receiving very threatening mails to their lives," Raila disclosed.

He added that the intimidation was meant to make the commissioners tow the line in a bid to make sure President Uhuru Kenyatta wins the repeat presidential election.

The NASA leader further asked the government and the Inspector General of Police to reinstate the commissioners' security to allow the officials have peace to carry out their duties.
