President Uhuru Kenyatta's Fresh Demand to IEBC After Full Supreme Court Ruling

President Uhuru Kenyatta has today reacted to the full ruling delivered on Wednesday by the Supreme Court of Kenya.

While addressing a delegation of leaders from Kenya's North Eastern region at State House, Nairobi, President Kenyatta stated: "We now want IEBC to tell us what measures it has put in place and which date the election will be held."

He stated that the election must be held within 60 days of the delivery of the Supreme Court ruling which was given on September 1st.

October 17th had been gazetted as the date for the fresh election, but it has since emerged that the date may be untenable.

This is after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission's (IEBC) technology partners, French digital security firm OT-Morpho, admitted that they may be unable to upgrade their systems in time for the October 17th elections.

President Uhuru also took the opportunity to express his dismay with the Supreme Court majority ruling, stating: "I heard things I cannot believe I would hear in a democratic nation."

He took offence with the Supreme Court's position that it is the process and not numbers that matter, accusing the judges of silencing the voice of Kenyans.

He maintained that the ruling was not in the spirit of the 2010 Constitution.

The Chebukati-led commission was expected to announce the new date for the election after a joint meeting with Jubilee Party and the National Super Alliance (NASA) that was originally scheduled for Wednesday but has been postponed.

NASA has demanded personnel changes be made at the electoral body as a condition for participating in the fresh election.
