IEBC Gives Uhuru and Raila 1-Week Ultimatum

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has given President Uhuru Kenyatta and NASA leader Raila Odinga one week to peruse the new list of election officials.

The IEBC has assured the candidates that they will be furnished with the complete list of election officials who will conduct the October repeat poll on Saturday.

According to the IEBC, the candidates and their respective parties will then have until October 6 to make their comments or reservations before publication of the final list of officials on October 12.

The officials will then undertake the required training period and be deployed to the 40,883 polling stations within the country and in the diaspora between October 10 and 18.

The commission will have completed the procurement of election materials – ballot papers, KIEMS kits and ballot boxes – by Wednesday, October 4.

The materials will be received in the country by October 14 while the transport services and other such arrangements will be concluded by October 20.

The dates have been announced amid a deep rift between NASA and Jubilee over disagreements on various sticky issues in the upcoming election.

On one hand, NASA has already made public a list of preconditions they term 'irreducible minimus' that must be met for the Opposition coalition to participate in the upcoming election. On the other hand, Jubilee has already begun a controversial process to amend the country's election laws and introduce changes NASA has strongly opposed and termed draconian.

The IEBC and other stakeholders are now pondering on how to bring both political sides back to the negotiating table to ensure the country goes to the polls on October 26 as scheduled.

This is after consultative talks led by IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati collapsed on Thursday following a walk-out by NASA leaders.
