5 Girls Hospitalised After Police Vehicle Overturns

Five female secondary school students were injured on Saturday morning after a police vehicle they were travelling in overturned.

The students of Ogande Girls High School in Homa Bay County had been sent home for school fees when they were given a ride in the vehicle from Rangwe Police Station.

According to Kanyach Kachar Location Chief Bernard Omuga, the vehicle lost control and landed in a ditch. The police driver also sustained injuries in the incident.

Omuga stated that area residents came to the aid of the students and rushed them to Ogande dispensary before they were referred to St Paul’s Mission Hospital in Homa Bay town.

“The police car was travelling on the road between Rodi Kopany Trading Centre and Rangwe centre. It lost control at a section of the road that has a lot of potholes,” Omuga stated.

Homa Bay County Police Commander Marius Tum confirmed the accident stating that they had launched investigations.

Mr Tum added that the driver would be examined to determine whether he was under the influence of any substance at the time of the incident.

The Police boss noted that the police driver could be charged for carrying students without authority.

“We will question the driver why he left his duties at the station and decided to ferry the girls,” Tum stated.
