NASA Leaders Teargassed in Nairobi Anti-IEBC Demos

A section of National Super Alliance (NASA) leaders were on Monday afternoon teargassed by the police as they tried to access the Nairobi Central Business District contrary to acting Interior CS Fred Matangi's ban.

Led by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Chairman John Mbadi and Dagoretti Member of Parliament Simba Arati, the leaders tried to access the CBD but were faced with the full force of the police.

The police fired teargas at the leaders who were forced to hurriedly leave the CBD.

They vowed to continue holding similar protests until their demands are met by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Mr Arati, while speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, confirmed that they were lobbed with teargas along Harambe Avenue, Anniversary Towers, and Parliament Road.

He, however, noted that they would not be intimidated adding that protests will continue tomorrow as scheduled.

Addressing the media shortly after the incident, Mbadi condemned the police for attacking them adding that their protests were organised.

"Our protests are the most organised. Police ought to provide security to the protesters. It is not our responsibility to provide policing in Nairobi," he stated.

The ODM Chair took a swipe at CS Matiang'i for banning their demos in the CBD adding that it was unlawful and unacceptable.

Meanwhile, the Opposition held similar protests in other parts of the country including Mombasa where police fired teargas to disperse the protesters.
