Why IEBC Cancelled Today's Uhuru and Raila Meeting

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) canceled today's meeting that was expected to bring together all presidential candidates including President Uhuru Kenyatta and Opposition leader Raila Odinga.

IEBC Communications Manager Andrew Limo, while speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, stated that the meeting had been rescheduled because of time constraints on the part of the candidates.

"Both sides agreed they needed more time, it was a very short notice," Mr Limo stated.

The Commission had indicated that it would have a meeting with the candidates on Thursday at 2.30pm.

Speaking on Wednesday at Bomas of Kenya, IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati extended an invitation to the parties involved in the election to engage in dialogue.

The Chair noted that if President Kenyatta and Mr Odinga do not meet for talks, there might be a crisis in the country as was witnessed after the 2007 elections.

"If candidates on all sides put their personal interests aside, first it will affect the quality of decisions we make.

"Political and economic problems can’t be fixed through elections or legal mechanisms alone. As the referee of this contest, I am extending an open invitation to the candidates to a meeting that I will preside over so they can talk,” he stated.

Other candidates invited for the meeting included; Dr Ekuru Aukot, Abduba Dida, Joseph Nyagah, Prof Michael Wainaina and Dr Japheth Kaluyu.

The meeting with presidential candidates was meant to address some of the issues the chair and the different parties had raised regarding the repeat poll.
