Government Goes After Kandara MP Alice Wahome

The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) has asked Inspector General Joseph Boinett to investigate Kandara MP Alice Wahome for harassing an IEBC official.

In a statement, the DPP said an immediate probe into the incident would lead to the arrest and charging of the legislator.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) condemned the incidence terming it as an election offence stating that Mrs Wahome would be punished.

“Our attention has been drawn to a video clip circulating on social media depicting Hon. Alice Wahome assaulting and/or obstructing an Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission official. I advise you to commence thorough investigations to cause the said MP to be arrested and charged in a court of law with the relevant offences under the Penal Code and the Election Offences Act,” Senior Assistant DPP Alloys Kemo said in the statement.

The MP allegedly assaulted Mr Malonza, accusing him of rushing to take the results to the electoral agency headquarters in Nairobi without her input.

Malonza further recounted that Mrs Wahome blocked the road he was using and proceeded to and shove him around.

A video circulating online showed Mrs Wahome confronting the IEBC official while a police officer, who requested anonymity, said that he witnessed the drama.

The legislator, however, gave a contradicting narrative to the events, claiming that she did not harass the Returning Officer.

She further maintained that she was composed and only wanted to check on the results that Mr Malonzo had indicated.

The MP further alleged that she was doubtful of how Mr Malonzo reacted and alleged that the whole ordeal was pre-planned after the video was recorded.

Mrs Wahome further refuted being served any papers by IEBC adding that she would not respond to their allegations.

“I will only respond when they (IEBC) call me. Why are they issuing statements yet they do not know what happened?” Mrs Wahome lamented.
