Kenya's Trending Topics on 31st October 2017

Kenyans were on Tuesday engaged in heated discussions that involved a number of reactions to the declaration of Uhuru Kenyatta as the President-elect following the October 26 fresh poll.

The Monday evening announcement by IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati was received with celebrations in Jubilee strongholds and was treated with contempt by those who oppose the Jubilee regime.

Using the hashtags #NotMyPresident and #IAmNotMilitia, social media users shared they remarks concerning the announcement.

Those contesting President Kenyatta's win argue that the 25 constituencies where IEBC was unable to conduct the poll should have been allowed to vote before the declaration.

During his pronouncement, Mr Chebukati clarified that the Commission had moved to announce the results following an assessment of all possible outcomes.

According to the IEBC Chairman, votes form the regions would have no consequence to the October 26 tally even if they were to be cast against the Jubilee candidate.

The announcement has also received opposition from the Civil Society in Kenya which has described the fresh poll as a "sham". 

The activists and lobby groups have further called for a year-long transition period in which the IEBC will be restructured and Kenyans allowed to recover from the aftershocks of the tumultuous election period.

The former Nairobi Governor aspirant topped the trends list on Tuesday after declaring that he voted for President Uhuru Kenyatta during the August 8 election.

The vocal city lawyer also topped Google Trends as one of the most searched topics on the universal search engine.
