Government Asked to Create Prime Minister Position

The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has urged for the amendment of the Constitution to include the post of Prime Minister in government.

Speaking during a press briefing on Tuesday afternoon, NCCK Secretary General Peter Karanja stated that the country was divided after the fresh polls and suggested that the most effective way forward would be having a Prime Minister.

The NCCK also proposed the creation of two Deputy Prime Minister slots stating that it would help to make the government more accountable.

Karanja, however, clarified that he was not advocating for a 'nusu-mkate' (coalition) government as the appointment of the Prime Minister would be made by the President.

He further called for the re-introduction of the post of Leader of Official Opposition and Deputy Leader of Official Opposition in the executive to enhance inclusivity.

The church leaders noted that national dialogue would come in handy and asked President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta to also listen to the cries of the people.

On the killings that took place during the election period, the NCCK bashed the police for using excessive force as much as they work in difficult circumstances.

The church leaders asked Kenyans to live in harmony and focus more on matters that unite them.

They also asked the Opposition to use the right channels to air their grievances with regards to the election, suggesting the Supreme Court, instead of castigating violence.

The last Prime Minister in Kenya was National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga in 2008 after brokering a power-sharing deal with then President Mwai Kibaki.
