2 Petitions Filed to Remove NASA Lawyer

Former Nairobi Senate aspirant Edwin Sifuna and 13 others are facing two ouster motions to remove them from the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) governing council.

Sifuna serves as a Nairobi representative to the council and has been a vocal lawyer for National Super Alliance (NASA)-affiliated politicians.

Mr Sifuna and the 13 other lawyers have been accused of incompetence especially due to political interference.

One ouster plea has been filed by a member of the LSK, Mr Michael Sakwa who accuses the council of misappropriation of funds collected to facilitate building plans for a proposed LSK International Arbitration Centre.

"The council has failed or refused to refund or account for members’ contributions for the construction of the centre," he accused.

The second motion was filed by Mr Murigi Kamande and has targetted LSK President, Isaac Okero, who the petitioner wants suspended from the council.

Mr Kamande has alleged that Mr Okero is liable for misuse and misappropriation of funds, abuse of office, lack of capacity to head the society and causing divisions among council members.

Kamande and Sakwa filed the petitions separately in late October and were planning to table them before members of the LSK during a Special General Meeting (SGM) scheduled for Saturday.

To avert the possible 'vote of no confidence' motion, President Okero has since called off the scheduled SGM through a letter issued by LSK CEO Mercy Wambua.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, an official at the LSK confirmed the reports to be true coveying the President's position that the motions were filed inappropriately.

The council comprises of the President, Vice President Faith Waigua - who also chairs Jubilee party's Disputes Tribunal, the Secretary/CEO Ms Wambua. Members include Mr Sifuna, Francis Masika, Alex Gatundu, Harriette Chiggai, Grace Okumu, Godfrey KitiwaDorothy Jemator, David Njoroge, Alan Kosgey, Ann Nyukuri and Jane Masai.
