CS Fred Matiang'i Announces Another Public Holiday

Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has declared Tuesday, November 28, a public holiday as President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto take the oath of office.

In a joint gazette notice dated November 23, Chief of Staff Joseph Kinyua also confirmed that the ceremony would take place at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Here is a copy of the notice.

According to the Assumption of Office of the President Act, the day on which the President-elect is sworn in automatically becomes a public holiday.

Preparations for the big day kicked off as soon as the Supreme Court upheld the October 26 repeat presidential poll, sanctioning President Kenyatta's win.

The ceremony will be attended by over 100,000 people - hundreds of them being international dignitaries.

According to Finance CS Henry Rotich, a budgetary allocation of Sh384 Million has been set aside to cater for the fete.

In July, President Kenyatta promised a special invite to the ceremony for a Kenyan boy who had promised to give him a congratulatory chicken.

During a live Facebook chat, Mr Silas Makau told the President that his son would like to personally hand him a chicken when he takes the oath after the General Election.

President Kenyatta granted the special request promising that the Kenyan boy would have the opportunity to give his gift.

"I promise you if that happens, your son will be here before we drive to Kasarani. I thank him for that and tell him God bless you. Thank you very much for that thought, " the President promised.

In compliance with the Constitution, Chief Justice David Maraga will administer the oath and hand over the instruments of power to commence President Kenyatta's second term.
