GSU Take Over Venue For NASA's Parallel Event [PHOTOS]

Security officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) have sealed off Jacaranda Grounds, Embakasi, where the National Super Alliance (NASA) is scheduled to hold a memorial service for victims of alleged police brutality.

The event was set to run parallel to President Uhuru Kenyatta's Inauguration at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on Tuesday.

Mounds of garbage have also been spotted at certain entry points to the Jacaranda Grounds.

Preparation for the event are, however, still ongoing at the grounds.

On Monday, Edwin Sifuna of NASA's legal team maintained that the coalition had notified Nairobi Police Commandant Japheth Koome as well as Soweto and Embakasi Police Stations of the memorial service.

Sifuna asked the police to provide security at the event, noting that the officers would be held responsible for any harm that would come to the attendees.

Mr Koome had earlier stated that his officers had not received notification of any other public gathering in Nairobi on the day of President Kenyatta's inauguration.

Head of Public Service, Joseph Kinyua, last week called on NASA to drop plans to hold a parallel event and instead attend President Kenyatta's Inauguration on Tuesday.

"For the people who want to move together we really would plead that for that particular day it is not necessary to have other events that day," he stated.

Police officers have on Tuesday also been spotted camped outside Dagoretti North MP Simba Arati's home.
