Imposter Arrested After Participating in Assembly Debate

A Nyamira county assembly official has been arrested and arraigned in court to answer to charges of having participated in assembly proceedings illegally.

Mr Charles Angwenyi is accused of having solicited and gained admission to the post of Sergeant-at-arms under false pretense.

The assembly officer has been charged with 12 counts of forging academic certificates and National Police Service (NPS) credentials to get the job in 2013.

Having previously served as a police officer, Mr Angwenyi allegedly forged NPS appointment letters to reflect that he had risen through the ranks to the point of Inspector to qualify for the assembly position.

In addition, the officer allegedly provided falsified information to the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) and was awarded a certificate showing that he completed his O'level exams in 1998.

Another accusation implicated Mr Angwenyi in a scam through which he obtained a false Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology and Criminal Justice from the University of Nairobi.

Appearing before Senior Resident Magistrate Alice Towett, the county official denied all 12 counts and was released on a bond of Sh500,000 with a surety of the same amount.

Mr Angwenyi's case will be mentioned before the court on December 14, 2017, with the hearing scheduled for June 5, 2018.

In Murang'a, ward representatives on Wednesday tabled a motion of impeachment seeking the removal of county assembly clerk Chris Kinyanjui.

The MCAs cited frustrations and interference from the clerk and proceeded to raid the clerk's office in a bid to forcefully eject him. The endeavor was quashed by Murang’a East OCPD Johnstone Limo.
