Court Orders Arrest of Bank Manager After Theft

A Nairobi Court has issued an arrest warrant against NIC Bank Operations Manager Paul Githinji who was linked to the theft of over Sh16.9 Million from the bank.

The Milimani Court issued the warrant of arrest after Mr Githinji disappeared following the theft on August 23.

Banking Fraud officer Corporal Knocker Nyasinga filed the application to have the suspect arrested stating that Mr Githinji switched off the CCTV and did not report to work after the theft.

He explained that efforts to trace the suspect were unsuccessful.

Earlier in September, another senior manager, Mr Richard Moses Wambugu, was arraigned in court after he was charged with the loss of the money.

He was, however, granted a bond of KSh1 Million or a cash bail of Sh200,000 by Milimani principal magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot after denying the charge.

During the hearing, the Prosecutor Ms Evelyne Maika lined up seven witnesses to testify in the case.

According to the case files, the Manager, together with others, was accused of stealing millions from NIC Bank, Buru Buru branch in Nairobi county.

Evidence presented in the court showed that Mr Wambugu had requested for an off day on August 23, 2017, to attend to some personal issues.

He, however, reported to the bank branch on the said Saturday and accessed the vault together with his co-custodian Mr Githinji and left.

Additionally, Mr Githinji, who kept the keys to the safe, was reported not to have handed over the keys or solid cash in the vault to any other bank official.

Two days later, Mr Wambugu reported back to the office and stated that his co-custodian's phone was off had not reported on duty and that Sh16.9 Million was missing from the vault.
