Transport CS Hit With Ultimatum Ahead of New Cabinet Appointment

Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia was on Sunday hit with a 4-week ultimatum to complete the construction of the Sh1.75 Billion Bondo-Siaya-Rangala road or face legal action.

Ugunja Constituency residents led by their MP Opiyo Wandayi threatened to block the busy road if the road works are not completed within a months time.

Mr Wandayi noted that he would take a censure motion against CS Macharia to Parliament if he does not ensure that the road is completed soon.

"We are demanding the immediate completion of the busy Bondo-Siaya-Rangala road, which serves at least 3,000 motorists daily," Wandayi was quoted as saying by the Nation.

The vocal legislator explained that the road had stalled for the last six years, adding that poor workmanship had made the road impassable and worse than it was before.

"Why is it that the quality of workmanship between Bondo and Siaya differs from Siaya /Rang'ala while the contract was one?

“What came of the project six years down the line since the section from Ndere to the bridge remains a nightmare to the road users,” he posed.

The MP called for an investigation into the tendering process on grounds that the contractor could have pocketed the whole Sh1.7 Billion without completing the works.

The ultimatum comes even as President Uhuru Kenyatta is working on his new cabinet.

On Sunday, the President directed all Cabinet Secretaries to prepare handover reports indicating that the new cabinet may be named soon.
