2 Parliament Nominees Disqualified

Two nominees to the East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) were on Thursday struck out of the proposed list by the Senate after it was discovered that they had not resigned from their previous jobs.

Ms Julie Njeri who was nominated by the Jubilee party was rejected after Senators found out that she is still serving as a Director at the Kenya Youth Enterprise Fund.

One of the National Super Alliance (NASA) nominees, Winfred Mutua, was blocked owing to the fact that she is a Member of County Assembly (MCA) in Machakos.

A report tabled by Senate Deputy Majority Leader Fatuma Dullo outlined the development while forwarding 25 names for deliberation beginning December 14.

The report was also tabled in the National Assembly by the co-chair of the joint parliamentary committee, Kajiado South MP Katoo ole Metito.

Earlier, the committee had rejected applications from Mr Cheruiyot Tamogei, Ms Hellen Makone, Mr Billy Baltazar and Mr Humphrey Njuguna who had failed to get the 1,000 signatures required of each candidate.

Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot urged the Senate to speed up the process to avoid holding the regional Parliament from kicking off its business.

"Our colleagues from other countries have been asking why we have held the entire regional bloc to ransom," the Senator conveyed.

Among those up for consideration from NASA is Oburu Odinga, elder brother to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka's son, Kennedy Musyoka.

The election process commenced in April 2017, however, disagreements over the composition of nomination lists derailed the appointments to the end of the term of the 11th Parliament.
