Police Boss Hit With Murder Charges in Nairobi

Former Ruaraka police chief, who was accused of torturing a suspect to death four years ago, will be charged with murder.

Justice Martha Mutuku in her ruling stated that the prosecution established that Mr Nahashon Mutua, a former Ruaraka station commander has a case to answer.

The former police boss was accused of torturing Mr Martin Koome to death inside police cells on the night of December 19, 2013.

Mr Koome was arrested earlier over allegations of domestic violence and later died as a result of torture and severe beating.

Police took him to Kenyatta National Hospital 20 hours later with a swollen face, deep cuts, and his wife could barely recognise him.

However, soon after the incident, the former Ruaraka commander was transferred to Machakos County as the staffing officer.

The court was told that a plan was hatched by the police to incriminate another suspect over the murder of Mr Koome.

Mr Kevin Odhiambo was arrested and charged with murder but the case was terminated after the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) investigated the matter and found Mr Mutua culpable.

The court heard that the suspect had interfered with the investigations by intimidating and coercing witnesses who had recorded statements with the oversight authority.

He was further accused of giving a misleading crime and incident report alleging that the deceased had been assaulted by Mr Odhiambo.

Justice Mutuku ruled that the evidence by an eye witness was corroborated by other witnesses adding that Mr Mutua was seen assaulting the suspect and the evidence pointed at him.
