President Uhuru Kenyatta Makes Changes to Jamhuri Day Celebrations

President Uhuru Kenyatta, through Government Spokesman Eric Kiraithe, has announced that Jamhuri Day celebrations will take place as expected on December 12.

The State celebrations will, however, be tailored to fit the current political situation in the country even as the National Super Alliance (NASA) plans a separate event.

Unlike in 2016 when President Kenyatta presided over the event at Nyayo Stadium, 2017 festivities will be held at the Moi Stadium Kasarani.

Moreover, the fete will be conducted under a new theme aimed at fostering national unity.

"Being one of the most important dates on the country’s calendar, Kenyans are once again invited to rally in unity around the values of patriotism and moving the country forward in the spirit of Kenya Mbele," the Government Spokesperson stated.

Mr Kiraithe outlined that the celebrations will still witness the marked by military and police parades, cultural songs and dances and the ceremonial raising of the Kenyan flag.

Members of the public have been invited to the fete as gates will be opened at 7 a.m. It will be the first State function President Kenyatta will preside over in his second term.

NASA plans to hold a parallel event on the same day as they have the inaugural convention of the People's Assembly.

The Opposition also plans to swear in former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as the people's president against various calls to cancel the plan.

Kenyans will have a keen eye on the events of the day even as Attorney General Githu Muigai stated that swearing-in Mr Odinga will amount to treason, a crime punishable by death.caption
