President Uhuru Kenyatta to Pay Sh53 Million for Magufuli's Mistake

President Uhuru Kenyatta's government will now pay a Sh53 Million compensation following an edict by Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli.

The Treasury is expected to issue the amount as part of the compensation to Namanga herders whose 1,400 cattle were auctioned by Tanzanian authorities.

Kajiado South Member of Parliament Katoo ole Metito disclosed the details to his constituents during his Jamhuri Day address, thanking President Kenyatta for the goodwill gesture.

"We are thanking Jubilee for this gesture. It is a relief to our people," the legislator commended.

A Tanzanian court ruled to have the cows belonging to Kenyan pastoralists auctioned after they crossed the border to graze.

President Magufuli further gave the court order impetus declaring that his government would not hesitate to take the same action should Kenyan cows be found grazing in Tanzania.

Later, Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed sent a protest letter to her Tanzanian counterpart arguing that the move was in bad faith.

CS Mohamed argued that the herders from both countries have been crossing the border for years unpunished. She added that the Kenyan government had never taken such stern action against the Tanzanians.

"The history we have had with Tanzania is very good and whenever there were issues we have resolved them. For this reason, it was a shock to the herders," she observed.

She called for good neighbourliness between the two countries promising herders that the matter would be resolved.

"Herders should not be punished for an omission that is not in their making. We hope Tanzania will allow our brothers and sisters on the border to continue visiting each other," she suggested at the time.

Tanzania has not relented its position on the matter.
