2 Highways Blacklisted for Kenyan Motorists

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NASA) has cautioned Kenyan motorists against using two highways where contractors are installing speed calmers.

Through its social media accounts, the transport safety agency issued a route advisory for travelers intending to use the Kisumu-Kericho highway to instead use the Njoro -Molo- Mau Summit route via Olo- Londiani.

" Those heading to Eldoret to use Nakuru-Eldama Ravine route as the contractor is on site to start the works on speed calmers. Traffic piling, drive safely," NTSA stated.

Kenyans.co.ke has established that speed calmers are alternative speed bumps are longer and a less aggressive solution to speeding.

They are designed to give vehicles a smoother ride significantly reducing the impact on both drivers and vehicles.

On Thursday, the agency explained that over 150 people were killed in the past two weeks through road accidents.

A joint statement by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA), the National Police Service and NTSA revealed that majority of the accidents were caused by speeding, overlapping, reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Several blackspots were also identified including; Salgaa, Sachangwan, Migaa and Soysambu in Nakuru County, Bonje area in Kilifi County, Manyani in Taita Taveta, Lukenya and Maanzoni in Machakos County, Salama and Konza in Makueni, Ntulele in Narok and Sagana area in Murang'a.

On December 12, over 20 people were killed in a grisly road accident that occurred at Sachangwan, along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.

Around 13 vehicles were involved in the crash; two trucks, a Land Cruiser, two private cars, lorries, shuttles, and three matatus.

A bus belonging to Modern Coast company heading to Kampala from Nairobi had one side completely ripped off.

A few hours before that, 19 people had died in another road accident at Kamukuywa Bridge blackspot on the Kitale - Webuye Highway.

Bungoma North OCPD Eliud Okello confirmed the accident stating that some of the deceased were travelling to Webuye from Kitale in a 14-seater matatu, which rammed into the rear of a West Kenya Sugar Company tractor transporting sugarcane.
