DP Ruto Promises Harambee Stars Sh50 Million After Winning CECAFA

Deputy President William Ruto on Tuesday promised to award the National football team Harambee Stars with a series of goodies after they won the 2017 CECAFA tournament.

Speaking at a breakfast meeting in his Karen residence, the DP noted that Harambee Stars would receive Sh50 Million if they qualify for the 2019 African Cup of Nations finals to be held in Cameroon.

"If you qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, the Government will give you Shs 50million. We will talk about the rest when we reach there,” he stated.

The DP promised the team a brand new bus to cater for the team's transportation in the next two weeks.

DP Ruto gifted the team with a Sh5 Million cash reward and delivered President Uhuru Kenyatta's token of Sh10 Million.

He congratulated Harambee Stars goalkeeper at the tournament, Patrick Matasi, for denying Zanzibar chances of scoring three spot kicks during the final.

On Monday, leading betting firm Sportpesa awarded Harambee Stars with Sh3 Million after the CECAFA victory.

Sportpesa Chief Executive Officer, Captain Ronald Karauri, presented the team with the cash, at a luncheon held in their honor at a Nairobi hotel by Football Kenya Federation (FKF).

During the luncheon, the CEO stated: "It will take a lot for Kenyans to start believing in our Football and this is a great start. I’m so proud today because we can start bragging about winning. This is the beginning of many great things".

The team had earlier received a token of Sh2 Million from Governors Mike Sonko (Nairobi) and Alfred Mutua (Machakos) who contributed 1 Million each. The governors had earlier on facilitated the free transportation of fans and entry to the stadium.

Meanwhile, the National team on Sunday won the CECAFA tournament after edging out Zanzibar 3-2 on post-match penalties.
