Date For 1st National Dialogue Set

Religious and business leaders have announced details of how a process of national dialogue will be undertaken.

In a statement released by Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) Chairman Lee Karuri and Bishop Alfred Rotich of the Catholic Military Ordinariate, it was revealed that a multi-sectoral forum with members drawn from various sectors would be constituted in January 2018.

The inaugural national dialogue forum will then take place in February.

The national dialogue, meant to resolve deeply rooted differences among Kenyans following the divisive 2017 election, will run for six months.

The process is also backed by diplomats who have for a long time been pushing for it to ease tensions in the country.

The statement reads in part: “As Kenyans of goodwill seeking the best for our country, we call on everyone with a stake in its future, and especially on Kenya’s political leaders, to support and engage with the national conversation.”

In the joint statement, Mr Karuri and Bishop Rotich noted that they would want the dialogue to involve leaders from both sides of the political divide as well as regular Kenyans.

“The issues will be presented by various sectors and compiled for discussion by the multi-sectoral forum,” they highlighted.

Envoys have been behind a push to get National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga to drop plans to be sworn in as the People's President. Attorney-General Githu Muigai also warned him that the move would amount to 'high treason'.

The former Prime Minister has, however, declared that he is ready to take the oath and die if that is what it takes to end electoral injustice.
