Raila Announces New NASA Protests

Opposition Leader Raila Odinga has announced that the National Super Alliance (NASA) will unveil new protests against the government this week.

In his new year message to Kenyans, Mr Odinga noted that the coalition will not stop its reform agenda and fight for electoral justice adding that NASA will not recognize President Uhuru Kenyatta's re-election.

"Within the first week of the New Year, we will unveil a program for civil disobedience, peaceful protests, non-cooperation with and resistance to an illegitimate regime in addition to People’s Assemblies," Odinga stated.

He explained that the problems Kenya faced were as a result of the Presidency which needed to be restructured to conform to the changing dynamics.

According to the former Prime Minister, the Presidency was interfering with and intimidating other institutions.

"We cannot stand by and watch as the monster rises again. Soon, it will be too late. In 2018, our work is clearly cut out for us. After three stolen elections in a row and the standoff that has ensued, ending the culture of sham elections with pre-determined outcomes must be the nation’s priority.

"We must nip the new trend where people continue to vote, the Opposition is allowed to exist and win a few seats in parliament, but the vote does not really count," the NASA Leader submitted.

Regarding how NASA will achieve the set goals, Mr Odinga explained that the coalition can either embrace dialogue with Jubilee on how to fix the electoral system, protect the judiciary and strengthen devolution or take the issue to the people.

Meanwhile, President Kenyatta also issued a new year's message where he called on all elected leaders to constantly improve the lives of Kenyans.

"Whether you are the leader of a family or of a small community, an MCA, an MP, a Senator, a Governor or a Cabinet Secretary, your job is to serve, to work hard every single day to confirm that the choice in you as leader was the right choice.

"The trust that we have been given as leaders is a sacred one. It was given to build, to deliver development, to concretely improve the lives of your constituents," he stated.
