Matiang'i Lands New Role in Uhuru's Government

The President Uhuru Kenyatta-led government has rolled out a new programme meant to centralize operations of all ministries and enhance service delivery, with Interior CS Fred Matiang'i in charge.

Known as the 'One Government' approach, the operations of key ministries will be linked to the counties through County Commissioners, Chiefs and Sub-chiefs in a move aimed at enhancing accountability.

The Interior Ministry will be in charge of the programme, effectively making Matiang'i the 'Super CS'.

3 ministries; Energy, Education and Transport have already announced new measures that they will take to comply with the new directive.

“As time goes by, we will continue making arrangements with the other ministries because it is the hope of the President that the government will work as one unit.

"This will be done to the grassroots level through national government representatives,” Matiang'i stated on Friday at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).

Already, County Commissioners have been instructed to countersign contract certificates for all national government projects being undertaken in their locales.

“The county commissioners were retained to link the government to the grassroots, We want to use the one-government approach to ensure it works.

"The commissioners are essential to ensure good work is done,” stated Transport CS James Macharia.

While affirming that the move would boost accountability, Macharia further promised that the development framework for roads would be broken down and handed to the relevant counties.

Officials of key parastatals in the Energy ministry will now also report to county commissioners.

“KPLC officials in the counties will now be directly under the county commissioners,” CS Charles Keter stated.
