Lawyer Donald Kipkorir Outlines Only 3 Jobs Deputy Governors Should Do

Nairobi-based lawyer Donald Kipkorir on Tuesday outlined the only three jobs Deputy Governors should be tasked with following the sudden resignation of Nairobi Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe who cited failure to earn the trust of Governor Mike Sonko as the reason for his decision.

According to Mr Kipkorir, the deputy county chiefs' roles should be to read speeches on behalf of the Governor, shower praises and echo whatever the governor states as well as attend funerals.

Mr Kipkorir explained that such undefined roles would minimise the chances of the deputies in the devolved units betraying their bosses.

"Office Of Deputy Governor is Much Ado About Nothing," he stated while lauding the committee of experts which crafted the Constitution for not caring about the deputy governors' role.

The Constitution under article 179 and 182 has remained unclear on the roles of the deputy governors, particularly on who takes over as the deputy in the event the office of the governor becomes vacant.

Such a scenario has been experienced in Nyeri County which has no deputy governor after former Deputy governor Mutahi Kahiga assumed the governor's office following the death of ex-county boss Wahome Gakuru.

Similarly, the office of the Nairobi Deputy Governor has remained vacant following the resignation of Mr Igathe over an alleged disagreement with Governor Mike Sonko.

Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen has, on the record, stated that he would sponsor a bill in the Senate on the position of Deputy Governors and succession within the counties.

"We need such laws very fast and we fully support the proposed amendment bill being pushed by Senator Murkomen so that we streamline such issues," Trans Nzoia Deputy Governor Stephen Tarus stated.
