Cabinet Nominees Face New Hurdle After Speaker Muturi's Revelation

President Uhuru Kenyatta recently announced the retention of six Cabinet Secretaries and nominated three others to be vetted by Parliament.

However, the nominees are yet to be approved since their names have not even been submitted to the National Assembly as expected.

House Speaker Justin Muturi, made the revelation on Thursday explaining that it was the reason why the vetting process was yet to start.

Speaking to journalists at Parliament Buildings, Muturi stated that they had even passed a motion to cut short their recess once they received the names.

“They have not arrived. That is the simple answer.

“Remember we had passed a Motion before we went on recess, that when the news comes during the long recess, they would automatically go to the departmental committee and to the Committee on Appointments.

"So if they had arrived, already the process would be nearing almost completion,” stated Muturi.

Parliament’s Standing Orders state that once the Speaker receives the relevant communication from the Presidency, he should forward the Cabinet nominees to the Committee of Appointments and those of nominee ambassadors to the Committee on Defence and Foreign Relations for vetting.

The MPs usually have 14 days to conduct approval hearings on the nominees and thereafter, the House is to approve or reject a report on their suitability to hold the dockets.

The three nominees are; former Director of Public Prosecution Keriako Tobiko, former Marsabit Governor Ukur Yatani and former Turkana Senator John Munyes.

President Kenyatta is set to announce his full cabinet in the next coming days.
