Matiang'i Announces When TV Stations Will be Switched on

Interior CS Fred Matiang'i on Wednesday stated that the three TV stations that were switched off (Citizen, KTN and NTV) will be switched on after completion of investigations.

Speaking from Harambee House, the CS stated that the government had a duty to protect its citizens thus the media houses would remain shut down.

He also stated that he had credible intelligence that elements operating under the banner of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) had ferried huge groups of people to Nairobi to cause mayhem on Tuesday.

Matiang'i further stated that coverage by the media would have lead to incitement and a 'massacre of catastrophic proportions' was going to happen.

"The government's responsibility is to protect the lives of people. We are committed to the rule of law.

"There was a well-planned effort intended to use the excuse of a possible conflict (between police and NASA supporters) to cause bloodshed," stated the CS, who also confirmed that the police were ordered to withdraw from Uhuru Park.

The security detail of NASA leader Raila Odinga was also withdrawn hours to the swearing-in and it has now emerged that the order was issued by the National Security Advisory Committee (NSAC).

Reports indicate that there was a meeting by top security organs on Monday who concluded that it would make no sense to provide State security for the purpose of engaging in an 'illegal activity.'

The same team decided that police should be withdrawn from Uhuru Park, relying on intelligence that the opposition leaders hoped a confrontation would arise between officers and their supporters.

The CS on Tuesday afternoon declared NRM an outlawed group in accordance with section 22 of the Prevention of Organized Crimes Act, 2010.
