Relief for Linus Kaikai, Larry Madowo and Ken Mijungu After Court Decision

An application for anticipatory bail has been granted to Nation Media Group (NMG) journalists Linus Kaikai, Larry Madowo and Ken Mijungu.

High Court Judge Luka Kimaru granted the application on Friday allowing the three to each deposit Sh100,000 with the court.

Justice Kimaru also ordered the three to report to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Monday to assist with the ongoing investigations.

In his orders, the judge also restrained the police from arresting and detaining them.

The three have been camping at the NMG offices for two days following suspicions that plain-clothed police were posted near the building to arrest them.

NTV's official Twitter handle on Wednesday posted: "Plainclothes officers reportedly outside Nation Center, allegedly to arrest NTV's Linus Kaikai, Larry Madowo and Ken Mijungu for unclear reasons".

Through their lawyers, the three moved to court seeking orders to bar their imminent arrest and prosecution by the government.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i released a statement on Wednesday in which he asserted that some individuals in media were privy to an alleged planned massacre of innocent citizens during the January 30 event organised by NASA.

"This was a well-choreographed effort intended to use the excuse of a possible conflict with law enforcement agents to occasion a massacre of our people and shed blood of innocent people in this country.

"This effort involving a wide range of actors individual and institutional was, unfortunately, a matter that some members of our society were aware of and as a result and because of some of the possible incitement that would be aided by media activities, we took the decision to switch off three media stations," the CS explained.

He went on to outline that the government had launched "a widescale investigation targetting individuals and organisations who include, but may not be limited to certain media houses."
