Kenya's Trending Topics on February 6, 2018

Kenyans were on Tuesday morning involved in a debate on whether detained Nairobi lawyer Miguna Miguna was dead or alive.

Various posts were shared indicating tension over the condition of the self-proclaimed General of outlawed National Resistance Movement (NRM), who had been in police custody for 5 days before photos of the lawyer emerged.

One of Miguna Miguna's lawyers, Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo became a trending topic on Twitter after being quoted insinuating that the vocal lawyer may have been killed under unclear circumstances while in custody.

While in court on Monday, Miguna's other lawyer John Khaminwa raised alarm over past instances when a suspect was not produced in court and later was reported dead.

Dr Khaminwa used, as an illustration, the case of Kiambu businessman Stephen Mbaraka Karanja who in 1987 was arrested on claims of robbery but a quest to have him produced in court in like manner as Miguna ended up with the exhumation of 19 bodies at the Eldoret Municipal Council cemetery in search of his remains.

Photos of the self-proclaimed General later appeared on social media indicating that as the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) stated, he had been arraigned at the Kajiado Law Courts.

Miguna, however, refused to take a plea at the Kajiado court citing that Justice Luka Kimaru was waiting for him to appear at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi.

Milimani Law Courts

Milimani Law Courts became a trending topic on Tuesday as proceedings of a case involving the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet, the DPP and the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) George Kinoti failed to honour a court summons issued by Justice Luka Kimaru.

The three bosses were instructed to personally escort Nairobi lawyer Miguna Miguna to the courtroom so that the Opposition leader could take a plea.

Later, chaos erupted outside the courts as protesters grew anxious when Miguna was not produced by the officials.
