Professor Nic Cheeseman, a columnist with the Daily Nation, has threatened to quit the paper after an obituary with a photo of National Super Alliance (NASA)-allied businessman Jimi Wanjigi was published in the Wednesday edition of the daily.
An obituary bearing the image and details of Wanjigi and his family was published with only a single letter in his name changed to read 'James Richard Wanjagi'.
"Very worrying times for Kenya, and sad for those who write for the Nation that this was published.
"A full explanation is needed or many of us columnists will have no option but to resign," Cheeseman, Professor of Democracy and International Development at the University of Birmingham, stated in a tweet.
Nation Media Group (NMG) had earlier issued an apology to Wanjigi and his family, announcing that they had taken action on those involved and forwarded the matter to the police.

"Nation Media Group does not condone such publication, which clearly goes against our editorial policy.
"We have taken immediate action against those responsible for the announcement, including reporting the matter to police for further investigations," their statement read in part.
Wanjigi is among 15 opposition leaders whose passports were suspended on Tuesday.
Others include Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho, Siaya Senator James Orengo and Chief Strategist David Ndii.
The billionaire businessman was with Raila Odinga on Tuesday at the Milimani Law Courts where Justice Luka Kimaru had ordered Miguna Miguna's release and asked police bosses to personally present him.
Miguna was, however, deported to Canada on Tuesday night as the government crackdown on the Opposition continues.
