NASA MPs Walk out Before Debate on CS Nominees

Members of Parliament allied to the National Super Alliance (NASA) on Wednesday walked out of parliament before a debate on the nine CS nominees.

Last week, the lawmakers had stated that they would boycott the session as Jubilee Party MPs were already hell-bent on giving the nominees a greenlight which they did.

The vetting of nine nominees to the Cabinet took place last week and the names forwarded to Parliament included; Mr John Munyes (Petroleum and Mining), Dr Monica Juma (Foreign Affairs), Ms Farida Karoney (Lands and Housing), Mr Peter Munya (East African Community and the Northern Corridor Development) and Prof Margaret Kobia (Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs).

Others that faced the panel were Mr Keriako Tobiko(Environment and Forestry), Mr Simon Chelugui (Water and Sanitation), Richard Achesa (Sports and Culture) and Mr Ukur Yatani (Labour and Social Services).

The vetting of the nine nominees to the Cabinet took place last week in Parliament but details emerged that one of them might be a drop-out.

It is alleged that the Sports nominee is a class 7 drop-out and there are plans to reject his nomination.

According to a bulletin by Radio Citizen on Monday, some members of the Parliament’s Committee on Appointments were against including him in the cabinet.

Busia Woman Representative, Florence Mwikali Mutua, however, jumped to the defense of Achesa stating that he can still perform.

According to the ODM affiliated Representative, there have been other excellent leaders who did not necessarily have a strong educational background.

"We have had and have many uneducated people in various sectors of our society who excelled and excel to date," Ms Mutua expressed.
