Deal That Moses Kuria Struck to Drop his Hate Speech Cases

Gatundu South Member of Parliament (MP), Moses Kuria, has struck a deal with the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to settle the hate speech cases facing him out of court.

During the hearing of his case, the prosecution revealed that Kuria had written to NCIC over the possibility of settling the case out of court but the commission had not yet responded to the request.

The Jubilee legislator, through his lawyer, therefore, asked the court for time to pursue the settlement over a 2015 hate speech case.

When the defense, however, revealed to the court of the settlement plan, the prosecution counsel told the presiding magistrate; “We have no objection to allow reconciliation out of court.”

The matter was to be heard on February 14 and 15 and the prosecution team was already prepared to begin hearing of two witness testimonies.

Principal Magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot, therefore, had the case adjourned to allow Kuria negotiate the settlement with NCIC.

Mr Kuria was on the spot over allegedly inciting youth in Nyeri to attack and “slash” politicians opposed to National Youth Service (NYS) projects in the county.

The case will be mentioned on March 14, 2018, for the court to assess out of court settlement progress.

In addition, Kuria also faces another charge of uttering abusive words to NASA Leader Raila Odinga and his wife Ida Odinga.
