Environment CS Keriako Tobiko's Chopper Ride Upsets Kenyans, Here's why

Environment and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko on Wednesday embarked on a chopper ride assessing Kenya's natural forests and water towers.

The CS who officially took over the Ministry from Prof Judi Wakhungu (who is now Kenya’s Ambassador-Designate to France) on Monday started a tour of Mount Kenya and Aberdare forests.

Users online were less than impressed with the chopper tour of the regions stating that the tour was a wasteful process since data on the forests was already there.

"Had @UKenyatta appointed someone with a deep understanding of our natural resources and pertinent issues affecting @KeForestService 's mandate, Environment CS Tobiko wouldn't be "assessing" Kenya's natural forest in a chopper. The data is there," one user observed.

One user lashed out at the CS noting that an assessment would only be conducted on the ground.

On the other hand, some defended the CS urging for patience to allow Tobiko to perform his duties.

"Environment CS Tobiko is on the right path. Please, sir help save our forests and ecosystems. It is a high time we stop talking and allow our new CS to do his duty. We need those results," one user wrote.

Later in the day, CS Tobiko made a stop at Kabaru forest to address Community Forest Association (CFA) members in the area where he explained how his Ministry's mandate was linked with President Uhuru Kenyatta's 'Big 4' plan.

"There cant be food security without a conducive environment. Universal healthcare is directly dependent on environment and forestry.

He further warned that: "Investors colluding with corrupt individuals to deplete forest resources will have their licenses revoked."
