CJ David Maraga Was Right to Criticise Me - Lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi Admits

Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi on Saturday admitted to his misconduct that forced the Chief Justice David Maraga to criticise him in Supreme Court.

Ahmednasir acknowledged that he messed up by commenting on social media about a case that was in court, an act that was largely condemned by the CJ.

"The CJ was right in his contention that I shouldn't have commented on the very case I was doing before that court," he stated.

Through his Twitter account, he, however, refuted claims that the CJ denied him the right to express his views on social media clarifying that he had a duty to highlight any judicial matter online.

"I have a duty like anyone else to highlight what is happening in our courts ... and the CJ wasn't stopping me from that," he wrote.

He issued this statement a day after the CJ blasted him at Supreme Court following his comments on court issues on social media

"This is a court which you appear to have no regard for yet you are coming before it.

“Do you want to litigate before this court or do you want to litigate elsewhere? You are arguing your case out there. And we were wondering whether you wanted to argue it here," posed the CJ.

In response, Ahmednasir apologized to the Court after he unsuccessfully attempted to defend himself.

"Is there a gag order for me not to comment about anything that happens in this court, My Lord? I don't think there is a gag order. This court has to be careful about these things.

"Okay, my Lord. I am sorry. I apologize. I am sorry about that," remarked the Senior Counsel.

The altercation occurred during the hearing of an application by the Director of Public Prosecutions seeking to uphold an order by the Supreme Court to free two Iranians who were serving a 15-year jail term for terrorism.
