Court Orders Petroleum CS John Munyes to Pay Sh 4.5 Million After Losing Case

The High Court on Tuesday threw out a petition filed by Petroleum Cabinet Secretary CS, John Munyes, challenging the election of Turkana Governor Josphat Nanok.

Justice Stephen Riechi directed the petitioner (Munyes), who was recently appointed to the cabinet, to pay Sh4.5 Million in costs.

The Judge struck out the case filed by Munyes on the grounds that it lacked sufficient evidence to warrant the nullification of Governor Nanok's win.

The Judge held that the Gubernatorial election was free, fair and held in accordance with the Constitution.

"The election were free and fair. The case lacked sufficient evidence to challenge the re-election of Nanok," Justice Riechi noted.

Reacting to the court ruling, Governor Nanok maintained that he would focus on the development agenda for the Turkana people.

"We will prioritise our activities towards dealing with the issue of water shortage and hunger," the Governor remarked.

The former Turkana Senator had challenged the gubernatorial results, claiming that they were shambolic and characterized by violence, voter bribery, corruption, use of force and intimidation.

Munyes, who vied on a Jubilee Party ticket, also accused the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) of supporting Nanok.

"The elections in the county started a day after the official date, materials arrived at a polling station in the afternoon and people were allowed to vote a day later," he stated.
