Trafficking Drugs Should be a Capital Offence - Interior CS Fred Matiang'i

Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS), Fred Matiang'i, has proposed that anyone found moving drugs within the country should be charged with the capital offence of treason which is imposed by hanging.

Speaking during the launch of the campaign against illicit brews at the Kenya School of Government, CS Matiang'i asked Members of Parliament (MPs) to impose such stiff penalties in order to cure the drug menace which has been posing a major threat to young children.

He cited the statistics given by United Nations (UN) which he stated are very harrowing on the rampant drug trafficking that occurs across the borders.

"A survey done in 2016 showed young boys and girls are getting so much hooked on the drugs. It is time for us to have an honest and candid conversation on drug trafficking in our country," he stated.

The CS also disapproved the narrative by that the government should act on everything, and urged every Kenyan to be responsible.

He called upon social sector agencies including faith-based leaders to hold consultative talks on ways to prevent the consumption of illegal brews.

"We need to clean up politics, see whether the politics facilitate the kind of things, sensitize people, work on ways that will address this," he divulged.

In relation to the economic sector, CS Matiang'i noted that the drug menace had posed a threat to the workforce who are mostly indulging in drug abuse that also undermines their sobriety.

"The President works hard to achieve the big four agenda, we must be determined so that they do not undermine the achievement of the agenda as we move forward.

"We need a healthy workforce, we are better off in engaging in preventive measures than curing this menace," he stated.
