Nairobi County was reported to have the highest number of casualties at 194.

Of these were 123 motorcyclists who perished together with 57 pillion passengers and 10 cyclists.

Mr Kimaru added that 52 drivers also perished during the time as well as 102 passengers.

Explaining the over 10-hour gridlock on Mombasa road on Saturday night, the traffic commandant blamed impatient drivers for the incident that saw many stranded overnight.

The traffic began on Saturday evening with vehicles stretched out for kilometres, stuck in the mud and an accident involving a lorry and a pickup at Lukenya, which claimed one life.

He further warned drivers caught creating a gridlock would be arrested, charged and have their licences withdrawn.
