Students Hospitalized After Fire at Kangemi High School

A dormitory at the Kangemi High School, Nairobi, came under fire on Sunday night leaving a number of students hospitalized.

A total of 12 students were reported to have sustained injuries during the night incident while others were admitted to hospital after inhaling heavy smoke.

School authorities confirmed the incident while conveying that the students were all in a stable condition at the hospital.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and manage to extinguish the fire before it spread to other buildings at the facility.

The affected dormitory is said to have been destroyed along with valuables belonging to the students.

Preliminary investigations by police did not establish the cause of the fire.

The school conveyed that the boys had been relocated to a different dormitory before investigations are completed and renovations are done.

A similar night fire incident took place at Dagoretti High School in July 2015 and was later blamed on faulty wiring. No students were injured in the incident.

Past fire incidences at Kenyan secondary schools have been blamed on learners' unrest. Up to 10 students recently perished in a fire incident at the Moi Girls High School, Nairobi.

A student at the school was later charged with nine counts of murder in connection with the incident that was allegedly planned on a WhatsApp group.
