Thieves Share Meal During Habib Bank Robbery Along Koinange Street

A bank robbery along Nairobi's Koinange Street on Monday left detectives and bank authorities puzzled as it was discovered that the thugs shared a heavy meal and even had leftovers in the bank lobby before escaping.

According to the investigators, the thugs also used gas cylinders to break open the safes that contained the cash at the Habib Bank AG Zurich.

"There is food leftovers so it seems that they had ample time to carry out the heist.

"They are people who knew what they were doing because they used papers and carton boxes to cover the windows so that the light inside could not be seen by the officers guarding the outside," Nairobi Police commander Joseph Ole Tito told journalists.

Bank authorities could not establish the total sum of money the robbers made away with.

Customers who turned up at the Central Business District (CBD) branch were directed to the bank's Westlands and Industrial Area branches.

Police were yet to declare any leads regarding possible suspects in the daring heist.

Dramatic bank robberies witnessed recently include a Sh50 Million heist at the Thika branch of the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB).

The thieves in the Thika heist dug an underground tunnel into the KCB volt and made away with the millions in a night robbery.

According to the Bank's branch manager Samuel Ng'ang'a, they only discovered they had been robbed during a routine check on the morning of the following day.

"I opened the strong room only to find that it had been broken into earlier and cash stolen," the manager explained.

Sh17.5 Million of the stolen cash was later recovered after police apprehended three suspects in Marurui area within Kiambu County.
