Turkana University College Closed Indefinitely

Turkana University College was on Monday closed indefinitely over reports of students unrest in the institution.

The Principal Egara Kabaji sent the students: "To avoid ugly situations we have closed the college in order to look into the grievances."

According to the administration, the students had been engaging in acts of lawlessness in the guise of complaining of exorbitant food prices and failure of lecturers failing to show up to teach.

On the other hand, students accused the principal of allowing the University Council to micromanage the university.

A student, Peter Ekuam stated: "Council members spend most their time in campus. We do not know what they do here. Who pays them?"

He urged the management to employ all workers on permanent and pensionable terms to have a certainty of their lecturers.

The academic board on their part justified the closure stating that the students had been uruly while harassing staff and blocking the main Lowdwar- Kitale Highway.

Earlier in March, Meru University Vice-Chancellor, Prof Japheth Magambo, was sent on terminal leave by Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed following the death of a student leader, Evans Njoroge, allegedly at the hands of police.

Magambo was replaced in an acting capacity by Prof Charity Gichuki.

The student leader, nicknamed Kidero, was reportedly shot at close range by a police officer on February 27.

A report from the Government pathologist confirmed that Njoroge was shot with a pistol and died instantly.

The family doctor, Dr Moses Njue who was also present for the post-mortem stated that the shooter had the gun pressed against the head of the deceased before firing.
