Church Leaders Warn Raila Against Joining Government, Causing Weak Opposition

Catholic Bishops have warned National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga against joining the government following his talks with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Addressing a press conference in a speech delivered by Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) chair, Rt Rev Phillip Anyolo insisted that Mr Odinga should not be too comfortable with the pact made last Friday to forget his role as the opposition chief.

Rev Anyolo stated: "Even as the dialogue goes on, it is very important to recognise the role of the opposition in any democratic society, to check on the government for better service delivery."

The Bishops further noted that the Opposition is integral in any country's development as it helps keep the government of the day in check.

Additionally, the clergy called on other NASA co-principals Musalia Mudavadi (ANC), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper Party) and Moses Wetang'ula (Ford-Kenya) to embrace the truce initiated by their leader.

Rev Anyolo was accompanied by John Cardinal Njue, KCCB vice chairman Rt Rev John Oballa, Joseph Obanyi of Kakamega Archdiocese and his Mombasa counterpart Martin Kivuva among other Church leaders.

The leader expressed hope that the pact would pave way for a greater commitment towards uniting Kenyans and seeking solutions to challenges bedeviling the country as well as building an all-inclusive society.

Their sentiments come a day after Majority Leader of the National Assembly, Aden Duale, announced that the ruling party is ready to form a coalition with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) for the 2022 General Election.

Duale declared this while seconding Minority leader, John Mbadi's motion which seeks to resolve support for the initiative on Building Bridges between the various political parties in parliament.

On Thursday, Amani National Congress (ANC) Deputy Party leader, Ayub Savula declared that ANC, Wiper, and Ford-Kenya are ready to take up the role as the official opposition if ODM merges with the ruling party.
